President Buhari Signs African Free Trade Area Agreement

Nigeria has signed an agreement which aims to increase trade between African countries. Eritrea becomes the only African country not to be part of the trading bloc.
Nigerian President Buhari signed the landmark agreement at the African Union (AU) summit in Niger and the first step will be to cut tariffs for goods from countries within the bloc but the timeframe to do this is yet to be announced.

Currently, African countries trade only about 16% of their goods and services among one another, compared to 65% with European countries, reports AFP news agency. The AU estimates that implementing the African Continental Free Trade Area – called AFCFTA – will lead to a 60% boost in intra-African trade by 2022.

It also reads that AfCFTA will create the world’s largest free trade area. With Nigeria signed up, AfCFTA’s dream of increasing intra-Africa trade, which currently lags behind the volume of trade the continent does with Europe, is now one step closer.

Now that AfCFTA can offer access to the enormous Nigerian market, they are in a much stronger position to negotiate with regional bodies in other parts of the world.

FG and Labour Finally Agree On Minimum Wage

After days of intense negotiations, the federal government and the country’s labour unions have reached a deal on the implementation of the new minimum wage.

Disagreement over how the new minimum wage law signed by President Muhammadu Buhari in April would be implemented had lingered for months, with the organised labour threatening to strike.

The Minister for Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, disclosed news of the much-awaited agreement early Friday morning in Abuja shortly after a government team he led concluded a meeting with labour.

The meeting, which began at 8.24 p.m. Thursday, ended 3 a.m. Friday.

The disagreement had centred around the consequential adjustments in salaries that must be implemented across board in line with the new minimum wage law.

Labour was demanding a 29 per cent salary increase for officers on salary level 07 to 14, and 24 per cent adjustment for officers on salary grade level 15 to 17.

But the federal government offered 11 per cent salary increase for officers on grade level 07 to14, and 6.5 per cent adjustment for workers on grade level 15 to 17.

Agreement

Speaking after the five-hour meeting, Mr Ngige said the consequential adjustment agreed upon are as follows:

“For COMESS wage structure Grade level 7 gets 23 per cent, Salary grade level 8 gets 20 per cent, Salary grade level 9 gets 19 per cent Salary grade level 10 -14 gets 16 per cent while Salary grade level 15-17 gets 14 per cent, ” he said.

”For those on the second category of wages structure, CONHES, CONRRISE, CONTISS etc, Level 7 gets 22.2 percent, Level 8-14 gets 16 per cent , Level 15-17 gets 10.5 percent, ” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the unions, the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba, said both parties participated in the process and made input.

”We want our workers to be committed and increase productivity. The guideline will be transmitted to all state councils and they will work in harmony as well as TUC and NLC will work together,” he said.

Similarly, the acting Head of Service, Folashade Yemi-Esan, said the outcome of the meeting was fruitful.

”I think it’s a very good thing the labour unions and government can actually sit together in a constructive manner to get an agreement,” she said.

Speaking on the implementation of the consequential allowance in States, Mrs Yemi-Esan said the federal government can only provide a guide to the state governments.

“The federal government cannot tell what happens in a state but work starts immediately to implement the consequential adjustment and arrears will be worked out.”

President Buhari signed the new minimum wage bill into law in April 2019. But its implementation has been stalled over salary adjustments disagreement between the labour unions and government representatives.

Specifically, the problem centred around the issue of relativity and consequential adjustments of salaries for various categories of workers.

On May 14, the federal government inaugurated the relativity and consequential adjustment committee, which set up a technical subcommittee to work out a template for the adjustment of salaries of public service employees in line with the minimum wage law.

900 Students Get Free Tecno Tablets In Abuja

Last week, 900 students of Glisten International Academy, Abuja got free Tecno tablets to enhance e-learning and attain global standard of academic excellence in the school.
Mrs Samira Jibir, Chief Executive Officer of the school said the essence of the free tablets was to ease teaching for the teachers and faster learning for the students. Jibir said meeting up with global practice on teaching was necessary to catch up with other developed countries.
“These Tecno Tablets will help the students to learn better and it will also help the teachers to impact positively on the students. The 16G 1G Rom tablets are going to have notes on different subjects where student can login and read even ahead of the class. This will make the teachers and students to be on same page of academy progress. It will also address the issue of torn notebooks, incomplete copying of notes and all that; since all the notes are in the tablets, the students will learn with ease."
“The devices cost the school N29, 500 each and we gave it free to not fewer than 900 students and still counting. We have expanded our internet provision which initially cost us N1.3 million but now over N2 million: we are determined to take the children to the global stage of technology,” Jibir said.
She said the journey to acquiring the devices began with a thought influenced by the happenings in society and how children were easily swayed by what they watch most specifically through telecommunication devices.
According to her, the thought metamorphosed into what they have today, physical devices for students to enable easier assimilation, learning and comprehension.
“Transforming education requires schools and educators to rethink how they teach and learn that is why we are here and doing what we are doing. Therefore, as a pacesetter that it truly is, Glisten has taken the bull by the horns by undertaking this feat. It is very glaring that the ICT age is upon us and the children we have today are more prone to learning from gadgets and other communication devices than manually. It is therefore wise to teach children through instruments and tools they are conversant with,” she said.
Meanwhile a student of the school, Abubakar Atiku, said he was happy about the devices stressing that it was a dream come true for him. Atiku said finally, the stress of copying large volume of notes from the blackboard was over.
Also, one of the teachers in the school, Mr James Asuatang said provision of the devices was more than easing the work.
“It will make the students enjoy learning and the teacher to be more focus in presenting subjects to the students. Students will learn faster and better because they can read their notes from the tablets at home before coming to the school,” Asuatang said.
However, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that those that attended the events included parents of students, teachers, an official from National Information Technology Development Agency and other stakeholders.

Eyes on Fraud: Tips to Fight Online Scam

Would you ever knowingly leave your front door unlocked when going out for the day? The chances are that nothing will happen, but surely the risk is not worth taking. This analogy describes how too many people approach online fraud and internet security. They either assume that nothing will happen to them, or they are simply unaware of the risks.
Smart Tips To Protect You
Shoptomydoor
Cybercrime is a constant threat, and just because it doesn’t represent a physical threat in the form of someone trying to break into your home, it can be just as damaging. So, be vigilant when shopping online. Follow these tips:
  • Always ensure the online store is a secured one, look for well-known security labels such as VeriSign and McAfee.
  • The website should have complete contact information, terms of use, and privacy policies.
  • Payment options should include third-party payment services such as Visa, MasterCard, and PayPal.
  • Beware of unbelievable offers. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. An item being sold at ridiculously low prices, has a high probability of being fake or expired.
  • Keep your personal details personal.  Credit card companies also don’t ask for your password over the Internet or the phone. Unless you want to be the lead character in a ‘based on a true story’ movie about identity theft, steer clear.
